March is Nutrition Month: How you eat is important, too!

Food has the potential to enhance our lives and improve health, but there are many factors that impact healthy eating – including how we eat. Healthy eating is about More than Food. It is also about where, when, why and how you eat. This includes consideration of food culture and traditions, food availability and sustainability. It’s about having a healthy relationship with food which includes feeling good about eating, enjoying a variety of food and having the knowledge, skills and confidence to eat healthy.

On March 18, we celebrate Dietitian’s Day which highlights registered dietitians as regulated health care professionals, committed to using their specialized knowledge and skills to unlock food’s potential and support healthy living for all York Region residents. It shines the spotlight on the profession and reminds people that dietitians are the trusted choice for reliable food and nutrition advice.

Building on Canada’s Food Guide, here are some key tips to enhance your food choices and eating habits:

Be mindful of your eating habits

  • notice when you are hungry and when you are full
  • Eat without distractions
  • Develop a sense of awareness of the impact of the eating environment on your food choices

Cook more often

  • Plan what you eat and rely less on ultra-processed foods
  • Involve others in planning and preparing meals
  • Know what is in your meals and choose healthier cooking methods

Enjoy your food

  • Take time to eat and savour the aromas, textures, flavours and taste of food
  • Celebrate culture and food traditions

Eat meals with others

  • make time to eat with family, friends and co-workers
