Pausing Construction

To Protect the nests of Kingfishers and Swallows

From a distance, the earth slopes on Bayview Avenue near Bloomington Road in the Town of Aurora look like ordinary construction areas. Getting up close reveals small burrows where Belted Kingfisher and Northern Rough-winged Swallows are busy nesting.

While making way for the new walking and cycling path on Bayview Avenue, crews discovered the nests and halted construction. Belted Kingfisher and Northern Rough-winged Swallows, their eggs and their nests, are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. Protection barriers are now installed to protect the nests and no disturbance can take place within 20 metres, including construction.

While construction is on pause until the birds leave their nests, travellers on Bayview Avenue will not be impacted and traffic is flowing. A section of the new multi-use path is closed. Construction is expected to start again in mid-summer and finishing work is all that remains.

Road improvements on Bayview Avenue, from Bloomington Road to Vandorf Sideroad, started in 2019 to benefit motorists, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians. The project includes road resurfacing, traffic signal upgrades, accessibility enhancements and construction of a 2.2 km multi-use path on the west side. The path is part of the Lake to Lake Cycling Route and Walking Trail that will connect Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario.
