The Regional Municipality Of York

Region's First Lendery is Now Open at Markham Public Library

Milliken Mills Branch

York Region, the City of Markham and York Region Makers celebrated the launch of York Region’s first Lendery at Markham Public Library’s Milliken Mills Branch.

A Lendery is like a library where you sign out items, rather than books. Members can borrow non-traditional items like sports equipment, tools and kitchen appliances, things that they need or want to try, but don’t need to own.

The Lendery is unique to York Region and was developed in partnership with the City of Markham Public Library and York Region Makers, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping entrepreneurs, inventors, makers and artists achieve their goals cost-effectively.

Milliken Mills Library is the first of several planned locations to launch the Lendery, with a total of 54 unique items currently available for loan. Additional items will continue to be added to the Lendery as they become available through donations. A second location is scheduled to open at the Newmarket Public Library in January 2020.

By providing opportunities to borrow items instead of purchasing them, the Lendery aims to reduce the environmental impacts related to production, transport and disposal associated with these occasional-use items and will also reduce the need for extra storage space in homes. Through the Lendery, products are more accessible to everyone in the community and it gives them a chance to try items out before purchasing them and may also help people to learn new skills with the items they have borrowed.

Anyone with a Markham Public Library card can borrow items from the Milliken Mills Lendery location. A Markham Public Library card is free to anyone that lives, works, attends school, or owns property in the City of Markham or York Region.

Visit Milliken Mills Community Centre & Library located at 7600 Kennedy Road in the City of Markham.

If you would like to donate items to the Lendery, Milliken Mills is accepting donations at any time, please call ahead, 905-513-7977 ext. 5536, to arrange a drop-off time. The Newmarket Public Library will also be accepting donations at their booth at the Newmarket Farmer’s Market on September 14th, 2019.
