Shopping Tips During COVID-19

Wash hands. Physically distance. Wear a mask. Stay home. Shop online.

As York Region continues to progress with Stage 2, malls and other businesses have started to re-open. While many of us are excited to do some shopping in-person, it is important to remain vigilant and reduce the risk of COVID-19. If you are considering going to the mall or other retail stores, here are some helpful tips to keep yourself and others safe.

Before you go out

Ask yourself, do I need to go shopping in-person? Can I buy what I’m looking for online?

As we navigate this pandemic together, the most effective way to reduce the risk of COVID-19 is to stay home. If you decide you need to shop in-person, plan your trip accordingly. If possible, plan your trip for off-peak hours when it will be easier to maintain physical distancing from others. Shopping right now shouldn’t just be for something to do.

While you’re shopping in person

Here are some tips to reduce the risk of COVID-19:

  • Practice physical distancing by staying 2-metres away from others – that’s about 7 floor tiles in all directions
  • Some stores can be small. If physical distancing cannot be maintained, wear a 2-layer non-medical mask or face covering
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Practice good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and cover your mouth if you need to cough or sneeze
  • Bring an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes to disinfect your hands after visiting each store, especially if access to soap and water is unavailable
  • Plan ahead, know what you need from each store to limit the amount of time spent in a more confined space
  • Follow the rules set out by the store: be patient if you’re required to wait in line due to occupancy limits and follow directional arrows and store signs set out by mall staff
  • Use contactless payment when possible
  • Do not litter – dispose of all gloves and used/unwanted face masks in a lined garbage bin
  • Be courteous of others in the parking lot – allow them enough time to safely enter and exit their vehicles
  • When you return home, wash your hands with soap and water immediately and disinfect personal items (cell phone, keys, wallet) you may have touched while shopping. Don’t forget to wipe down surfaces in your car you might have touched.

We all must continue to do our part to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

Remember, if you are feeling unwell, stay home and seek assessment at one of the three COVID-19 Assessment Centres in York Region.
