Staying Safe Outdoors during COVID-19

Fresh air and exercise is important in supporting mental health and well-being, especially during these stressful times. When venturing outside to enjoy the weather, it is important to stay safe from the sun and be mindful of the public health measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While we encourage everyone to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors this weekend, it is important to take the necessary precautions. Make sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect yourself against harmful UVA and UVB rays. If you decide to go for a walk in one of York Region’s lovely Forest Tracts, be sure to pack insect repellent and to be mindful of poison ivy while hiking the trails.

As temperatures continue to rise into the summer months, it is important to stay cool and reduce your risk of heat related illness. If you are spending some time outside, wear loose-fitting, light coloured clothing made of breathable fabric. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and rest frequently to allow your body temperature to cool down.

Even though you are outdoors, it is important to maintain proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. If possible, wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. If you cannot wash your hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The fresh air can trigger seasonal allergies for many of us, so be sure to cough or sneeze into your arm.

Physical distancing must be maintained at all times with people outside of your household or social circle. Whether you’re on the beach or on the trails, maintain 2-metres of distance from others. If physical distancing is not possible, such as in washrooms, please wear a 2-layer non-medical mask or face covering.

Even with all the precautions related to COVID-19, it is important you follow the park, trail or beach rules. Pathways may be one-way, so it is important to follow the instructions set out by staff.  Be courteous of other guests by allowing them time to enter and exit their vehicles as parking may be limited. As an added precaution clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, such as picnic tables and barbecue units, with disinfectant wipes before and after each use.

Remember, if you are feeling unwell, stay home and seek assessment at one of the three COVID-19 Assessment Centres in York Region.

If we all play by the rules and are courteous of others, we can still have a fun summer outside!
