About the Countryside and Agricultural Area Locations

With increased population and employment growth, we recognize the need to protect natural areas and agricultural lands for future generations. York Region has a wealth of opportunities in the countryside and natural areas for adventure, exploring, learning and family fun.

Forests in York Region include over 29 million trees, 2,100 hectares of the York Regional Forest resulting in $8 million in annual energy savings from reduced building heating and cooling requirements, removal of 3,200 tonnes of air pollution and the equivalent to removing 66,000 vehicles off the road annually or 10 per cent of vehicles in York Region alone.

Agriculture plays a significant role in York Region’s economy, with more than 700 farms located in the Region. Agriculture in York Region consists of not just farms, but also a thriving agri-food sector. York Region is one of Canada’s largest municipalities and the second largest business centre in Canada. The Region is forecast to reach 1,790,000 residents and 900,000 jobs by 2041. We need to manage and direct this growth to build strong, safe and complete communities, while at the same time protecting natural areas and agricultural lands. Regional staff is currently updating the York Region Official Plan, which will guide the Region’s population and employment growth in accordance with recent Provincial direction.
