The Countdown is on! Road Trip Safety Essentials

All week long York Region has been posting about the ultimate reasons to explore your city or town and encouraging you to celebrate Road Safety Week by helping inspire your next road trip.

Now that you’re ready to take the trip, use this packing guide to help you prepare and double-check so you can hit the road with confidence.

Safety-First

York Region’s Emergency Preparedness Program has got you covered with this check-list to ensure your car has all the tools you need to aid in an emergency. Every driver should carry a survival kit in their vehicle. Here are some items to consider when getting your kit started:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • Booster cables
  • Vehicle fluids (i.e. windshield washer fluid, gas-line antifreeze, motor oil, transmission oil, power steering fuel, brake fluid, anti-freeze)
  • Emergency flares and/or emergency triangles (follow manufacturer’s directions when using)
  • A plug-in air compressor and/or puncture seal gels
  • A flashlight and spare batteries
  • Tool kit, including a good quality screwdriver set with a flat head, Philips ( X ) head,
    Robertson head ( □ ), and a Torx head ( ), pliers, small hammer, utility knife,
    ratchet socket set, adjustable corench, Vice-Grip pliers, rolls of electrical and
    duct tape
  • First aid Kit
  • A blanket; emergency foil blankets are best
  • An emergency candle and camping matches

Always remember to keep your vehicle serviced regularly. Keep your gas tank at least half full and drive according to road conditions.
