The five reasons to take a staycation this long-weekend

Family in car

Ever heard of a staycation?  It sounds like vacation, but you don’t have to travel abroad to explore new sights and sounds. That’s what staycations are all about! Check into a hotel or take a day-trip to somewhere new and do nothing but rest, relax and recharge.

The Regional Municipality of York or York Region as its most often referred to as, is more than a tier of government or a place on a map. Its people, its home, its work and it’s a place to play. Today marks the first day of Road Safety Week and as we acknowledge all the services York Region provides to help make our roads safer, we’re encouraging residents to take a timeout and discover some of the great people and places located right here in York Region.

There are many reasons to #loveyr and in honour of Road Safety Week; we’ve rounded up five convincing reasons to take a staycation at home this holiday weekend.

Reason 1 – Easy on the pocket

Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Subway Sign

A staycation is like an all-inclusive vacation deal, the best part is that you know exactly how much you are going to spend, and there are no unpleasant surprises!

The TTC Line 1 extension is now open, the first subway to open in the GTA in 40-years. For kids who don’t often venture out to the big-city, why not take them on a subway ride from the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre that doubles as a budget-friendly staycation. Enjoy the 8.6-km Toronto to York subway and once you’re all finished, catch a bite to eat at one of the nearby restaurants in the area.

Reason 2 – It offers a timeout

With work and daily chores, there is likely a lot on your mind every day. Taking a staycation and exploring nearby retreats for some much-needed bonding with your partner and little ones is a great reason to pack up the car and explore York Region. And if you’re a solo traveller, you get all the time in the world to pamper yourself, plan your week, make some to-do lists, watch your favourite shows on repeat and catch up on your reading.

Check out the Newmarket Riverwalk Commons, a short drive from Regional Road, Yonge St. where features like an outdoor stage, Farmer’s Market and many other summer activities are being called the new heart of Newmarket. (Newmarket Riverwalk Commons photo courtesy: Town of Newmarket)

Reason 3 – No maps required

Although maps might be a thing of the past, we often rely on our navigation systems to help guide us to our next uniquely remote local. When exploring York Region there’s no need for guided assistance, these bustling destinations are often minutes from your tried and true routes.

No heavy luggage to carry—a vacation (err, staycation) cannot get more hassle-free, can it?

Reason 4 – Get to know your neighbourhood

Tree Top Trekking Stouffville

Avoid the usual holiday crowds and discover the fun, excitement and outdoor adventures that await you in York Region this spring. The Region is responsible for managing, maintaining and improving approximately 4,200 kilometres of roads, 2,000 Regional road intersections, bus rapid transit corridors, bridges, sidewalks, cycling lanes and related infrastructure. York Region is working to make your trips across the Region as reliable and efficient as can be, why not get out there and explore?

Consider booking an unforgettable day treetop trekking in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, an activity fun for all ages.

Reason 5 – It’s #Fun!

Child jumping in the air

There’s really no better reason to take a staycation, other than the fact that you’ll have a ton of fun trying something new. Convinced?

Make sure to tag your photos on Instagram using #loveyr to enter our contest with @theGGsisters running all week-long for your chance to win one of three gift cards to explore the Region.
