The future of public transit in York Region

York Region Transit released its 2018 Ridership Growth Study identifying initiatives that have the highest potential to positively change the way public transit is offered in York Region and attract more riders to try public transit.

There are several new initiatives that will help change and define what public transit in York Region will look like in the coming decade and beyond, they include:

  1. Continue to ensure the policy foundation in place at the municipal and provincial levels remain intact.
  2. Focus on urbanization in York Region by continuing to develop strategic intensification within Regional centres and corridors to attract riders and sustain public transit.
  3. Continue to align service with strategic infrastructure projects such as the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension and GO Transit’s Regional Express Rail program as these connections will significantly change travel patterns.
  4. Concentrate service improvements through the Viva network, through the expansion of the Viva network and the implementation of a Frequent Transit Network transitioning existing service into a network that provides more frequent service, with the ultimate goal of providing transit service at frequencies of 15 minutes or better, seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and complemented by other local, express, shuttle and community bus service.
  5. Improve service quality to address traveller concerns relating to fare processing, operator behavior and schedule adherence.
  6. Implement special pass programs to include post-secondary students, low income residents and employers encouraging transit usage and providing service at a more affordable cost.
  7. Implement parking management to manage single occupancy vehicles usage and ensure the right mix of location and pricing attracts motorists to take transit for part of their commute.
  8. Increase park and ride locations to attract potential commuters from outlying areas, similar to the experiences of GO Transit, TTC and other transit providers.
  9. Embrace shared mobility and car sharing to include these emerging and existing technologies as options to help improve travel. As these technologies begin to replace car ownership, they can be included in the mix of modes and services residents can use to travel across the Region and beyond.
  10. Address first and last mile connections with improved active transportation connections that can includes pedestrian routes, maintaining sidewalks, building bike lanes and shelters, and integrating bike share into residential neighbourhoods or low-density employment clusters to encourage transit usage and enhance connections.
  11. Continue outreach and engagement to build strategic partnerships and increase awareness of services throughout York Region.
  12. Enhancing innovation and technology to ensure real-time information is available in a variety of formats that will help improve communications with customers and attract new riders.

These initiatives have the potential to attract up to an additional 500,000 travellers to York Region Transit in the future once fully implemented. For more information on YRT and the Ridership Growth Study, please visit
