Tips for safe BBQing during COVID-19

It’s the long weekend and we know what that means: BBQs and gatherings with friends and family!

While outdoor gatherings provide one of the safest means of socializing, it’s important that you continue to protect yourself against COVID-19 by practicing physical distancing, staying within your social circles, practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette and frequently cleaning high-touch surfaces.

If you’re hosting outdoor BBQs or taking part in some, reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by doing the following:

  • Do not host or attend any BBQs if you have COVID-19, are unwell, or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19
  • Have your gathering outside where there is more space for proper physical distancing
  • Socialize at a distance; always maintain a physical distance of 2 metres while socializing with those who aren’t part of your household or social circle

Remember to:

  • Make a guest list and stick to the indoor gathering size limit of a maximum of 50 people (or less if you cannot maintain physical distancing for everyone)
  • Set out physical distancing guidelines before guests arrive this includes planning the seating arrangements
  • Ask guests to bring their own supplies including cutlery, glassware, food and drinks
  • Remind guests not to share their food or drinks with others
  • Provide disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer for guests to use when entering the home or outdoor area
  • Put out individual towelettes so that everyone uses their own personal piece of paper towel to dry their hands after they've washed them

Guidance on social gatherings and public events has changed in Stage 3:

  • Indoor gathering limits are now a maximum of 50 people, as long as physical distancing can be maintained
  • Outdoor gathering limits are a maximum of 100 people

Remember, social circles continue to be kept at 10 people province-wide, regardless of the re-opening stage.

COVID-19 remains active in our community and residents are reminded to continue to protect themselves and their families while venturing out in the community.
