As we’ve seen with the recent flooding happening in Ontario and Quebec, all communities are vulnerable to an emergency. Check out our new Emergency Preparedness Guide for comprehensive information about how you and your family can prepare for emergencies before, during and after they strike.

Based on the hazard identification and risk assessment specific to York Region, these are the top five hazards and risks faced by our communities:

In addition to building an emergency preparedness kit, here are a few things you can do to prepare for these potential incidents:

  • Severe summer weather
    • If thunder roars, go indoors! Remind your children that they should seek shelter as soon as they hear thunder to avoid being struck by lightning
    • Plan where you and your family would take shelter if there was a tornado warning. The best place is indoors, and in a room on the lowest level (basement) that is small and windowless (such as a bathroom, closet or hallway)
  • Power outage:
    • Protect valuable electronics like computers and home entertainment systems by installing surge protectors
    • Have back-up light sources such as flashlights with batteries in all major rooms of your house
  • Health emergencies
    • Add your health care provider’s contact information to your mobile phone and in an accessible spot within your home – you can record important phone numbers on this Emergency Contact List
  • Hazardous materials incidents
    • Be aware that you should move away (up wind) from a hazardous spill to minimize the risk of exposure or contamination
  • Winter storms
    • Plan to stay indoors during winter storms, if possible. Monitor radio and or television for weather updates.
