Up to 15 cm of snow could fall #OnYRRoads

Snow plow clearing a road

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of a mix of snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and strong winds beginning early Tuesday morning.

The weather service says Northern York Region, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham could receive between 15 and 20 cm of mixed precipitation before ending on Wednesday.

The Regional Municipality of York is prepared for this severe weather and ready to tackle snow and ice on Regional Roads. Follow #OnYRRoads for updates.

York Region also wants to remind residents that a little forethought can make a big difference in pulling through these natural hazards safely.

Follow these winter storm tips, and be prepared for another blast of winter weather:

Plan ahead

•    Give yourself extra time to get to your destination
•    Stay off the roads, if possible, during extreme weather conditions
•    Let us do the driving by taking YRT/Viva
•    Make sure your windshield fluid and vehicle fuel is topped up
•    Clear snow, ice and frost from all windows, headlights, tail lights and roof
•    Have winter tires on your vehicle
•    Carry a roadside emergency kit

Motorist Safety

•    Slow down, avoid sudden turns, braking and accelerating and be respectful of pedestrians
•    Make sure your windshield fluid and vehicle fuel is topped up
•    Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead
•    Be mindful of pedestrians and drive according to the road conditions
•    Make sure it’s easy for other drivers to see you; please turn on the full headlight system
•    Slow

Plan for the cold weather

•    Limit exposure to extreme cold weather
•    Check local weather forecast for temperature, wind chill and weather warnings
•    Keep extra mittens and gloves in the car, house or school bag
•    Wear layered, windproof and waterproof clothing
•    Make sure your head, face, ears, neck, hands and feet are well protected

Pedestrian Safety

•    Watch out for ice – if you must walk on ice, slow down and take tiny steps
•    Do not wear earphones or text while walking #PledgetoIgnore
•    Obey stop signs and traffic signals when crossing an intersection; make eye contact with drivers before  crossing the street
•    Dress to be seen; wear bright, reflective clothing in order to be better visible to drivers
•    Be visible and be seen
