Waste Depot Changes - COVID-19

Only Accepting Garbage and Household hazardous waste

Effective Friday, March 27, York Region’s Public Waste Depots are only accepting garbage and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) at their respective sites, until further notice.

Service offerings have been reduced in an effort to enhance physical distancing on site and reduce potential risks and further spread of COVID-19. The health and safety of our customers, staff and community is our top priority.  At this time, all York Region public waste depots remain open during their regular service hours.

York Region has taken the following precautions at our waste depots. Signage is posted at every facility to inform customers of physical distancing measures in place.

Waste Management staff have been instructed to:

  • Practice social distancing with each other and with customers
  • Practice protective personal practices such as washing hands frequently, avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth and coughing or sneezing into tissue or sleeve
  • Not come into work if they are ill, experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, travelled internationally within the last 14 days or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive to COVID-19
  • No longer accept cash transactions for both their protection and the protection of others
  • Ask customers before entering the sites if they have travelled within the last 14 days or if they are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. If yes, they are directed to return home

Residents are asked to:

  • Not visit a York Region Waste Depot if they have travelled internationally within the last 14 days, or have a fever and one or more of the other COVID-19 symptoms
  • Remain patient in their car until their turn so that staff can safely serve one customer at a time at Household Hazardous Waste Depots
  • Practice physical distancing on site
  • Only bring garbage and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) at our respective sites, until further notice.

Local waste collection schedules remain unchanged for recycling, green bin and garbage.  Check with your local city or town for any service disruptions or closures.

In the event that collection or processing capacity is impacted or reduced, communication to residents will be issued using Regional, city and town websites and social media.
