What if York Region was a village of 100 people?

Village of 100

We know that York Region is made up of people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. With nearly 1.2 million people, it is also one of Canada’s fastest growing communities and the third largest municipality in Ontario. But what would it be like if York Region was a village made up of just 100 people? Community and Health Services put together data from the 2016 Statistics Canada Census to find out.

The information tells us that York Region residents are:

  • Diverse, comprised people of various ages, living arrangements, countries of origin and income levels
  • Aging, with less than one third of villagers under the age of 25
  • Mostly English-speaking, though many would speak languages like Chinese, Farsi, Russian and Italian at home
  • High-earning, with an average individual employment income of $50,867
  • Educated, with 70 per cent of the working-age population having some form of post-secondary education
  • Commuters, with 90 per cent of working-age residents commuting to work

This information helps the Region, municipalities and all residents understand the needs of our rapidly expanding, unique community. Take a look at the Village of 100 to learn more about York Region’s changing population.
