What kids can expect when getting a COVID-19 test

Child with COVID-19 test swab near nose

Since the start of the school year, we have seen an increasing number of children being tested for COVID-19. For kids going for a test, they may be afraid and want to know what to expect. Share child-friendly information with them to help ease their worries before going for a COVID-19 test:

  • Stick to the facts and describe details about what they can expect including where they will go, who will be there, what they will see and how long it will take
  • Explain the person conducting the test will be wearing personal protective equipment, including a mask, face shield, gown and gloves
  • Describe how the test is done in a child friendly manner – use a Q-tip to show them what the swab will look like and tell them that it may tickle or feel a bit weird when put into their nose. It may feel like what happens when you get water up your nose when you are swimming
  • Reassure them that you will be with them the entire time and will help them stay still during the test which will be over before they know it
  • Consider showing your child a picture or video of the test to put them more at ease
  • Tell them to look up, take deep breaths and count to 20 together
  • Suggesting your child close their eyes may help

As a parent or caregiver, your attitude is important to your child when getting tested for COVID-19 so try to remain calm and relaxed as this will help everyone. When the test is complete, talk to your child about what they did well. This will help them remember this as a positive experience should they need to do it again.

Starting in December, voluntary saliva testing for COVID-19 will be offered to students, school staff and immediate family members at select schools in communities with a high prevalence of active COVID-19 cases. Testing is voluntary and consent will be required from parents or guardians for students under 18 years of age.
