Improving Yonge Street

Photo Intersection Yonge Industrial Parkway South Aurora.

The Regional Municipality of York is investing in building a safe, efficient and reliable Regional transportation network for all users. Improvements to Yonge Street between Henderson Drive and Industrial Parkway South in the Town of Aurora began in spring 2020 to improve the conditions of the roadway to provide safer travel for all users.

For over a decade, sinkholes have been forming along Yonge Street between 100 metres south of Henderson Drive and Industrial Parkway South. Since 2014, maintenance work has been done to repair the roadway as sinkholes continued to form. Despite these repairs, sinkholes continue to develop along the roadway.

October 2020 update: Construction began in May 2020 and was anticipated to be completed by the end of 2020. Shortly after work began, the contractor discovered that the site conditions were not as expected based on pre-construction testing. Further investigation and testing have been completed and construction can resume. Work will start in November 2020 and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2021. Crews will be on-site before construction activities commence to prepare the work site.

In partnership with the Town of Aurora, we will be improving the roadway by:

  • Reconstructing the road to prevent sinkholes from forming on the road in the future
  • Repaving the road with concrete and asphalt pavement
  • Installing a drainage system that will funnel ground water into a storm water pipe. This system will eliminate the possibility of future sinkholes
  • Installing a watermain
  • Installing and replacing storm sewers

Impacts to traffic throughout the project:

  • Yonge Street between Henderson Drive to Industrial Parkway South will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout the construction period
  • During the first stage of construction, the lanes on the west side of Yonge Street will be closed and motorists will be travelling on the eastbound lanes
  • Temporary traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Yonge Street and Industrial Parkway South to help with traffic control during construction
