2019 Governor General Award Recipients standing with York Region Paramedic Services

The Regional Municipality of York is pleased to announce eighteen of its paramedics have been honoured this year for their commitment to delivering exceptional care.

Eight paramedics were awarded the prestigious Governor General of Canada Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal for 20 years of service; another seven received their First Bar for 30 years of service; and one received the Third Bar for 50 years of service. The remaining two paramedics were awarded the Ontario Award for Paramedic Bravery for their actions in rescuing and caring for a patient. The award is given to paramedics who show courage, while on the job or off-duty, in the face of grave, personal danger.

The Governor General Awards were handed out during the annual Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs galas held in Windsor and at Queen’s Park. The bravery awards were awarded in a separate ceremony at Queen’s Park with Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Christine Elliott.

The Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal was created in 1994 to recognize paramedics who performed their duties for a minimum of 20 years in a commendable manner and is one of the highest honours a paramedic can receive. Paramedics also receive a bar on their medal at 30, 40 and 50 years of service.

Congratulations to all of the award recipients on their success and we thank them for their commitment and service to our communities.
