Saturday, April 7, 2018 is World Health Day. The World Health Organization celebrates health each year to draw attention to important issues about health and wellness.

York Region is committed to ensuring that every resident has access to the tools and resources needed to live a healthy and balanced life. Whether we are at work, at home or at play, keeping our minds and bodies active and strong will lead to a more fulfilling and enriched life.

Here are some wellness tips to help you lead a fulfilling and healthy life:

  • Stay hydrated. For optimal hydration, the average adult should be drinking six to eight glasses of water each day. Did you know that York Region provides clean, safe, reliable drinking water to over one million people? The Region’s water is monitored around the clock to ensure it is in compliance with the Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standards and it comes from three sources: Lake Ontario, Lake Simcoe and groundwater wells within York Region. Learn where your water comes from!
  • Get active. Choose physical activity whenever possible. Studies show that we need at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. An active lifestyle can lead to improved fitness and strength, growth and development, mental health and mood and help provide the chance for a longer life. Physical activity can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis.
  • Get outside. Explore York Region and all that it has to offer. From lush forests to winding bike paths, playful parks and sprawling lakes, there is no shortage of places and spaces to explore across York Region. Did you know that a total of 45 kilometers of cycling infrastructure were added to Regional Roads in 2017 making it easier to get where you want to go by bike? York Region also works closely with the nine cities and towns to improve the bike network including trails, multi-use paths, bike lanes, paved shoulders, and bike-friendly neighbourhood streets. Find out how you can stay safe while exploring York Region with these safety tips.
  • Be kind to your mind. Along with physical health, emotional and mental health play a large part in overall health and wellness. Everything from getting a full seven to nine hours of sleep each night to taking time to meditate daily to completing mind exercises like reading a book or doing a puzzle will help contribute to a healthy, strong mind. York Region offers mental health consultations and referrals for seniors to ensure that our aging community is properly supported. As well, York Region works with new parents to ensure their adjustment to parenting is as smooth as it can be.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Eating foods packed with protein, vitamins and nutrients will help you live a longer, healthier life. It is often difficult to plan ahead and prepare nutritious meals that the whole family can enjoy, which is why York Region offers programs in the community to help families plan and cook meals at home and provide the tools and tips needed to improve their food skills.
  • Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake. York Region provides services and supports to assist with substance abuse, quitting smoking, substance education and more. For more information on alcohol abuse, quitting smoking, and substances that can cause negative reactions to the body, York Region is available to help through Access York.

Did you know: York Region Public Health is the third largest health unit in the province! Dedicated to delivering programs and services focused on preventing diseases, protecting residents’ health and safety and promoting healthy lifestyles and environments, York Region Public Health works with you to ensure that you are living your best life, every day.
