Region continues water and wastewater research initiati

reclaimed water on sod testing

York Region’s water and wastewater research initiatives received a boost thanks to recent funding from the Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Green Municipal Fund (GMF), Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP) and Municipal Asset Management Program (MAMP). The projects represent work being done in large and small municipalities.

As part of 125 initiatives, York Region received $191,300 for the Water Reuse Research Demonstration project.

Reused or reclaimed water is wastewater that has gone through various treatment processes to meet specific water quality criteria with the intent of being used again in a beneficial manner such as irrigation and industrial uses. Recycling water, or using reclaimed water, is an environmentally friendly way to protect our fresh water resources.

Thanks to additional funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities in 2019, research on the effects of using reclaimed water on plants has been expanded to include perennial flowers and seed germination trials. The research project will continue for the 2019 growing season, followed by an analysis of the results to help York Region better understand the effects of using highly treated wastewater for irrigation purposes.

The Water Reuse Research Demonstration project is anticipated to end in 2020.
