York Region Provincial Offences Court front counter services

York Region’s two Provincial Offences Act Courts have resumed in-person front counter services.

The Newmarket Court has relocated to its new location at 17150 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket. It was previously located at the Tannery at 465 Davis Drive.

The Richmond Hill continues to offer services at 50 High Tech Road in the City of Richmond Hill.

The following in-person services are now available to the public:

Court Operation front counter services:

  • Payments
  • File trial requests
  • Obtain appeal information
  • General Inquiries
  • File re-opening applications
  • File time extension applications

Prosecution front counter services:

  • Apply for disclosure
  • Serve appeals, motions involving appeals, factums, transcripts and books of authority for Part I POA and Part III POA Municipal offences
  • Serve materials for motions and applications

Please note, the Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice has extended the time to serve and file an appeal to December 1, 2020. Currently, only urgent Provincial Offences Act appeals to a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice will be accepted for service by the prosecutor’s office and filing at the Ontario Court of Justice at 50 Eagle St. West, Newmarket. Urgent POA appeals are limited to those where the defendant is subject to a licence suspension. If you received notice from the Ministry of Transportation of a licence suspension, you can serve and file an urgent appeal. Non urgent appeals will not be accepted for service and filing until further notice. For more information on appealing a Provincial Offences case, please see York.ca/courts or the Ontario Court of Justice website.

Many services do not require a physical visit to the courthouse. The public is encouraged to use available online services when possible to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Online services include:

Courtrooms remain closed and all other in-person Provincial Offences Act (POA) court matters scheduled from Monday, March 16, 2020 through to and including Friday, October 16, 2020 are adjourned and will be rescheduled to a later date at the discretion of the Ontario Court of Justice. If a matter is scheduled or an individual has been summoned during this time period, there is no need to attend court. A notice of new court date will be sent by mail to the address on file with the court. Please advise the courthouse of any changes to your contact information.

If you have received an Offence Notice (also known as “ticket”), you have until December 1, 2020 to select one of the three options printed on the back of the Offence Notice. Option 2, pleading guilty before a Justice of the Peace is currently not available.

As the courts resume services, several new health and safety protocols have been implemented to keep the public and staff safe from the risk of COVID-19 including:

  • COVID-19 Screening before entrance will be permitted
  • Plexiglas barriers at public counters
  • Hand sanitizer stations located throughout the building
  • Physical distancing reminders such as signs and floor markings
  • Enhanced cleaning
  • Limitations on the number of people who can attend court

Any individual entering the facility, including staff and members of the public, are required to wear a face mask or covering unless exempt.

Should you require accommodation for a special need, please contact the York Region Courts Accessibility Coordinator at 1-877-331-3309 prior your courthouse visit.
