York Region receives the Golden Tap of approval

The Regional Municipality of York is the first municipality in Canada to be inducted into the Leading Utilities of the World (LUOW), a growing network of the world's most forward-thinking water and wastewater utilities. This network of industry leaders is an initiative of the Global Water Leaders Group, a non-profit organization aiming to create a better story for water worldwide and is supported by foundation sponsor CH2M.

“This is an esteemed honour to be recognized in the Leading Utilities of the World membership,” said Erin Mahoney, Commissioner of York Region Environmental Services. “Through this network our Region will continue to learn about innovative solutions and common challenges while sharing our latest advances with our industry peers.”

Leading Utilities of the World members must be nominated by other gold-standard utilities and complete a rigorous interview and selection process. As part of the process, the Region highlighted three areas of innovation in water and wastewater services: finance and capital procurement, overall utility productivity, and wastewater treatment and environmental impact.

Under these areas the Region is:

  • Implementing a Council-approved water and wastewater rate structure that eliminates future debt, while planning for $1 billion of asset rehabilitation and replacement work
  • Using an integrated approach to unlock capacity in the Regional systems through inflow and infiltration reduction and water conservation efforts
  • Demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability as a driving principle in wastewater service delivery and enhancing the communities in York Region

This induction recognizes York Region’s strong commitment to innovation. The golden tap is a visual pledge that our Region continues to seek out leading-edge environmental approaches and practices while delivering results in a cost-effective manner within our heavily regulated water and wastewater industry.

For 2017, there were five new member utilities inducted into the network by the advisory board, bringing current membership to a total of 22 members worldwide. Each new member organization was presented with the Golden Tap trophy to commemorate the membership during a special gala dinner at the American Water Summit hosted by Global Water Intelligence.
