York Region remains in Stage 1 of re-opening

While many Ontario regions have been given the green light to proceed with the next stage of re-opening, many are wondering why York Region isn’t among them.

The Provincial government recently announced many regions can move to Stage 2 of the re-opening framework which includes the opening of more businesses and a host of other recreation and leisure activities. However, like many of the regions in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, York Region does not meet provincial criteria to enter Stage 2 at this time.

The province is expected to make weekly announcements on which regions can enter the Stage 2 and when.

Effective June 12, the province is also allowing gatherings of 10 people, up from the previous limit of five, the opening of day-care centres and places of worship Ontario-wide, including in York Region.

While in Stage 1, residents can:

  • Visit loved ones if keeping the gathering to 10 people or less. Continue to practice physical distancing when gathering with individuals outside your immediate household
  • Shop online, use curbside pick-up or visit retail stores that are open
  • Walk and cycle around the neighbourhood or on trails and play individual or outdoor sports if a 2-metre physical distance can be maintained
  • Use a golf course or marina

Until York Region enters Stage 2, residents cannot:

  • Dine on outdoor patios
  • Use a public pool, beach or splash pad
  • Visit a hair or beauty salon
  • Hit a shopping mall
  • Use recreational facilities for team sports

As things in York Region continue to reopen, residents are reminded to continue to protect themselves and their families while venturing out in the community by:

If you are ill or experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, stay home or visit one of the three York Region assessment centres.
