York Region’s 2020 Accessibility Status Report

The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) and York Regional Police are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive community that recognizes and celebrates all dimensions of diversity and where people of all abilities can access the same programs, services and facilities.

The 2020 Accessibility Status Report provides an update on the actions taken by York Region and York Regional Police to improve accessibility and implement the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA).

In 2020, the COVID-19 global pandemic changed our communities and our world. Although these have been challenging times for all of us, our vulnerable populations were, and remain, at an increased risk of experiencing detrimental impacts from the virus. This report provides a snapshot of how the accessibility of York Region’s and York Regional Police’s programs and services was enhanced to conform to the “new normal” of COVID-19.

Key Accomplishments

The 2020 Accessibility Status Report highlights the various actions implemented by York Region and York Regional Police over the past year to create and maintain accessible communities, including:

  • Providing virtual consultations for children with special needs
  • Connecting vulnerable seniors to technology supports
  • Enhancing Mobility On-Request services with COVID-9 prevention measures
  • Equipping York Regional Police patrol vehicles with removable tablets to facilitate virtual sign language communications
  • Consulting with the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee (YRAAC) to inform public health activities

What’s next?

York Region and York Regional Police will continue to implement AODA requirements and the actions outlined in the 2020-2023 York Region Multi-Year Accessibility Plan. York Region provides progress reports on implementing the actions of the Accessibility Plan on an annual basis.
