York Region to expand after-school programs

After school programs

Over 250 children were supported in 2016

Due to the success of a two-year pilot program to provide free after-school programs in four social housing sites, York Region Council approved a recommendation to maintain and expand after-school programs at four social housing sites in Richmond Hill, Markham and Newmarket (two).

After-school programs help?

Transportation costs, social isolation, mental health and complex situations can make it difficult for families and children living in social housing to access supports. York Region’s social housing after-school programs help children living in social housing gain skills and information to reach their full potential.

In 2016 alone, York Region’s after-school program at social housing sites supported over 250 children and youth aged seven to 17. The programs include a variety of age-appropriate activities including:

Children (7 – 12 years of age):

  • Homework Support
  • Cooking/Nutrition Skills
  • Active and Co-Operative Games
  • Life skill development

Youth (13 – 17 years of age):

  • Homework Support
  • Healthy, Active Living and Life Skills
  • Leadership opportunities/engagement in community programs
  • Mental Health Supports
  • Pre-employment skills

Program enhancements

New aspects of the program include:

  • Starting in 2018, after-school programs will move to include school breaks, professional development days and summer programming.
  • Subject to budget approval and consultation on proposed locations, two more social housing sites will be added in 2019 bringing the total to six.

With the new program enhancements, the total cost is still less than five dollars per day per participant.

York Region supports after-school programs

After-school programs at social housing sites strengthen York Region’s network of human services to help local youth achieve their full potential.
