YRT provides convenient on-request transit service to travel

York Region Transit (YRT) recently received a Corporate Leadership Award from the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) for its leadership in innovation for Mobility On-Request (MOR) service.

Mobility On-Request service uses sedans, minivans or small buses to provide a cost effective way to expand service in low-demand areas of York Region, and has incorporated a free mobile application, called Ride OnRequest, to increase convenience for travellers.

YRT provides On-Request transit service in select areas in the Towns of East Gwillimbury and Georgina. The service provides travellers the ability to book rides up to 60 minutes in advance of their trip. At the time of their trip, a YRT-marked vehicle picks up the traveller and drops them off in a predetermined geographic area, with access to community hubs and connections to regional transit options. The success of the service for lower demand areas has seen ridership increase as high as 40% each year.

YRT also saw an opportunity to utilize the On-Request approach for Town of Aurora residents commuting on the GO train. Instead of travellers driving five minutes to the busy GO parking lot, registered users can book a ride using the mobile application, Ride OnRequest, and the shared-ride service picks customers up from their home and takes them to the GO Station and back, providing a flexible travel option, reducing congestion around the busy station and alleviating the stress of finding parking.

CUTA Leadership Award

The Mobility On-Request service and mobile application will continue to expand in 2020, providing more shared-ride opportunities for residents, as well as a convenient way to get to and from GO Stations.
