2017 Highway 7 Protected Bike Lane Pilot

The Regional Municipality of York installed flexible posts to increase safety and protect cyclists as part of a protected bike lane pilot project. The 2017 pilot area spanned a 500 metre segment of the bicycle lane on the north side of Highway 7 between Town Centre Boulevard and Rodick Road in the City of Markham. This pilot ran from August to October 2017. Protected bike lanes that provide physical separation between motorists and cyclists has emerged as a best practice in cities across the world. Flexible posts have been used successfully across Canada in cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax and many other cities globally.

Overall, a positive response was received through an online survey. A total of 64 individuals responded, where 84.4% felt that the protected bike lane added an element of safety for cyclists. Also, 72% indicated that they wish to have the flexible posts installed over a greater length on Highway 7, while 14% said there should be a different type of protection, and 14% said to leave the bike lanes as they are.

Further study is required in 2018 in order to evaluate the total cost and impact of the flexible posts, including installation and maintenance.
