June 17 to August 30, 2019

York Region is replacing a culvert located on Major Mackenzie Drive West in the City of Vaughan. The culvert is a large steel pipe tunnel that transports water from the West Don River. To complete the replacement work, Major Mackenzie Drive West from McNaughton Road/Avro Road to 250 metres east of McNaughton Road/Avro Road is scheduled to be closed from June 17 to August 30, 2019.

A full closure of the road is required to ensure the work is completed as quickly, efficiently and safely as possible. Access to all properties will be maintained during this closure.

Additional work will be undertaken during the closure to minimize future disruption. Specifically, a pedestrian and cycling-friendly underpass will be built next to the new culvert to allow for future travel underneath the roadway, support the City’s trail system network and encourage active transportation in the community. In addition, a new watermain service connection will be installed to support the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital.

Please note: As with other road construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. York Region will provide advance notice whenever possible.

What are some of the detour options?

Motorists:

  • Travellers going west on Major Mackenzie Drive may detour on Keele Street north to Teston Road
  • Travellers going east on Major Mackenzie Drive may detour on Jane Street north to Teston Road
  • We recommend you plan your trip ahead of time and use navigation apps, such as Waze and Google Maps, to help find the best detour route for you. York Region partners with Waze to provide real-time traffic information on Regional roads in order to help plan your travels

Transit users:

  • A York Region Transit detour will be in place. More details on this will be communicated when available

Pedestrians and cyclists:

  • There will be no pedestrian access within the closed section of road in order to protect the public from construction hazards
  • Pedestrians and cyclists may detour through the existing trail at Maple Airport Park, located on Avro Road south of Major Mackenzie Drive, and the surrounding subdivisions

Why is the road being fully closed?

  • It is not feasible to keep the road open due to the existing site conditions, including depth of excavation and limited space. The road will be closed to ensure the safety of all travellers and workers
  • In addition, in order to protect fish habitat in the West Don River, all in-water work must be completed between July 1st to September 15th. Closing the road will help to greatly speed up the construction and ensure that the work is completed within the stipulated timeframe
  • Understanding that this is a busy area, York Region is making every effort to ensure the work is completed as quickly, efficiently and safely as possible, and is working closely with City of Vaughan staff. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding
