2018 Municipal Election

The next municipal election will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018.

Regional Chair Information

Bill 5, the Better Local Government Act, 2018 received Royal Assent on August 14, 2018. Further to the Provincial Government's Bill 5, the position of Regional Chair will be elected by members of York Regional Council at their inaugural meeting on Thursday, December 6, 2018.

Consequently, the Municipal Act and the Municipal Elections Act have been amended to reverse changes made in 2016 to mandate the election of the Chairs in the regions of York, Peel, Niagara and the District of Muskoka. The method of selecting the chair in 2018 will now revert back to the appointment process in place in 2014. The position of Regional Chair will be elected by members of York Regional Council at their inaugural meeting on Thursday, December 6, 2018.

Section 10.2 of the Better Local Government Act, 2018 provides that a person who filed a nomination for the office of regional chair for the above-referenced regions is deemed to have been withdrawn as of July 27, 2018.

The financial reporting requirements and timelines as set out in the Municipal Elections Act and as described in the Candidates Guide produced by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing remain unchanged.

If you previously registered as a candidate for Regional Chair position please contact the Regional Clerk at Office of the Regional Clerk or call 1-877-464-9675 ext. 71300 for information on financial statements.
