The York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting was called to order at 4:01 p.m. on June 21, 2017.

Committee received the presentation by Michelle Herder, Program Manager, Corporate Customer Service Strategy, Strategies and Initiatives Branch, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer.

3. Update on National Access Awareness Week
Committee received an update from Kim Adeney, Program Manager, Accessibility, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services regarding “National Access Awareness Week”, which was recognized from May 28 to June 3, 2017.
4. Update on Accessibility Advisory Committee Forum – York Region
Committee received an update from Steve Foglia, Vice Chair, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee regarding “Accessibility Advisory Committee Forum – York Region”. On May 31, 2017, York Region hosted the forum for Accessibility Advisory Committees from local municipalities, school boards, and hospitals entitled “Building Livable Accessible Communities”.
5. Update on Accessibility Activities
Committee received an update from Lois Davies, Manager, Social Policy and Accessibility, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services regarding “Accessibility Activities”, as follows:
1. At a ceremony in Markham on May 10, 2017, Steve Foglia, Vice Chair of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee was presented with the Provincial Volunteer Service Award.
2. In May 2017, Lisa Gonsalves, Director, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services was presented with the Municipal Accessibility Champion Award from the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association.
3. York Region is hosting a series of pop-in events for residents to share thoughts on building a more welcoming and inclusive York Region and to inform the development of the York Region Diversity and Inclusion Charter. Pop-in booths will be located at local events in several communities listed at www.york.ca/InclusiveYR and an on-line survey is also available.
4. On June 5, 2017, the federal government released a report identifying high unemployment rates, inaccessible buildings and barriers in transportation as some of the key issues that need to be addressed in new federal accessibility legislation.
5. The Community and Health Services Department is working with the Transportation Services Department to review and respond to the recommendations made by the Standards Development Committee regarding proposed changes to the accessible Transportation Standards.
6. The Government of Ontario launched a new strategy titled, Access Talent: Ontario’s Employment Strategy for People with Disabilities, which aims to connect more people with disabilities to rewarding jobs and more employers to new talent.
7. On April 27, 2017 Nova Scotia became the third province in Canada to pass accessibility legislation. The Accessibility Act has set a goal of making Nova Scotia accessible by 2030.

Committee was reminded that the next meeting will be held on September 27, 2017 beginning at 4 p.m.
