The York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. on November 18, 2015

1. York Region Official Plan Update

 

Committee received the presentation by Teresa Cline, Senior Planner, Planning and Economic Development, Corporate Services, who provided an overview of the York Region Official Plan as well as the accessibility policy direction within the Plan.

 

2. Davis Drive Rapid Transit Project Update - Integrating Accessibility

 

Committee received the presentation by Linda Filippi, Project Manager, Community Liaisons and Kristina Bergeron, Community Liaison, York Region Rapid Transit Corporation, who provided an update on the Rapid Transit project on Davis Drive including the accessibility features that are being incorporated.

 

3. Making Online Maps Accessible

 

Committee received the presentation by John Houweling, Director of Geographic Information Services (GIS), Corporate Services, who provided an overview of ‘YorkMaps’ and the improvements made in order to make the information accessible to people of all abilities.

Committee received the 2016 Accessibility Advisory Committee Meeting Schedule.

 

Other Business

 

5. National Access Awareness Week

 

Committee received the update by Lois Davies, Manager Social Policy and Accessibility (A), Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services who advised that May 29 to June 4, 2016 is being proposed as National Access Awareness Week in York Region.

 

6. Update on Accessibility Activities

 

Committee received the update by Lisa Gonsalves, Director, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services, who provided the following information:

 

1. Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation

The Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation is up for review in 2016, which is the regulation that includes requirements relating to information and communications, employment, transportation and the design of public spaces. 

 

2. Customer Service Standard Review

The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Regulation was the first standard to become law. The final reviewed and amended Regulation is posted on the Ontario government’s Regulatory Registry website for a final 45 day public comment period (until December 31, 2015).

 

3. Ontarians with Disabilities Act Repeal

As committed in Ontario’s Accessibility Action Plan, the Ontario government has repealed sections of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The ODA is Ontario’s original accessibility legislation and the sections that have been repealed are comparable to those addressed in the AODA.

 

4. Awards

The Region has been nominated for a 2015 Ontario Business Achievement Award as an Ontario Leader in Accessible Employment.  Hosted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, this prestigious award showcases some of the province’s most successful businesses and the positive impact that they have had on Ontario’s economy.

Kirsten Hill, a founding member of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee, has been awarded an AODA 10th Anniversary Champion Award.   Kirsten was nominated by Metrolinx for her long-standing service with the Metrolinx Accessibility Advisory Committee.

 

7. Next Meeting

 

The next meeting of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee is scheduled on February 24, 2016.

 

The York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting adjourned at 5:59 p.m.
