The York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. on November 23, 2016.

Tribute
1. Town of Georgina Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler
The Committee paid tribute to the memory and legacy of the Town of Georgina’s Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler, who passed away on November 1, 2016.
Regional Councillor Wheeler served on York Regional Council for 28 years from 1988 to 2016 and was the longest consecutive-serving member in York Region Council’s 45 year history. He started his political career as a Georgina Ward Councillor in 1982 and sat on Georgina Council for 34 years.
He was a founding member of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee and served every term since 2003 when accessibility planning began under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act. He was an informed, committed and tireless advocate for accessibility and was instrumental in the progress the Region has made in making the York Region community more accessible.
The York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee supports York Region’s plan to name a future accessible trail in the York Regional Forest in the Town of Georgina in honour of former Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler.

7. Update on York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Legacy Event
Committee received a verbal update from Joann Simmons, Legacy Event Committee Chair regarding the education and networking forum being planned in conjunction with local accessibility advisory committees for May 31, 2017 at the York Region Administrative Centre.
8. Update on Accessibility Activities
Committee received a verbal update from Lisa Gonsalves, Director, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services, as follows:
1. The provincial government will be establishing a Standards Development Committee to identify solutions for barrier removal within the healthcare sector.
2. York Region has been requested to participate on the Standards Development Committee for the development of an Information and Communications Standard.
3. Nova Scotia has introduced its own Accessibility Act, Bill 59.
4. The federal government is considering the development of a Canadian Disabilities Act.
5. Recruitment will be taking place to replace two citizen members of the Accessibility Advisory Committee who recently resigned. The Regional Chair will be appointing a Member of Council to fill the vacant Council position.
Committee received a verbal update from Steve Foglia, Vice Chair, who recently attended an event at the Quaker House which was built in 1802. Steve advised that $325,000 was raised to install an accessible washroom and elevator in the historic building.
9. Retirement – Commissioner Adelina Urbanski
Adelina Urbanski, Commissioner of Community and Health Services has announced her retirement in February 2017. Commissioner Urbanski joined York Region in 2010, the year the first Accessibility Standard for Customer Service came into force, and has led the implementation of all standards since that time. Under her leadership, York Region has received two Excellence Canada awards. She will be greatly missed.
