The Human Services Planning Board meeting was called to order at 9:16 a.m. on September 28, 2018.

1. Opening Remarks and Acknowledgement of Contributions by Human Services Planning Board Members
Regional Councillor John Taylor, Co-Chair of the Human Services Planning Board thanked the members of the Board for their time commitment, Susan LaRosa, Co-Chair for her perspective and contributions, and Regional Chair Emmerson and Lina Bigioni, Chief of Staff for their support of the Board. Regional Councillor Taylor also praised the regional staff who supported the Board for their ability to advance the work of the Human Services Planning Board.
Regional Councillor Taylor highlighted the Certificate of Appreciation given to each member of the 2014-2018 Human Services Planning Board, recognizing their dedication and contribution to the collaborative effort of creating a common vision and shared actions to address York Region’s challenges and opportunities that go beyond the ability of any single organization.
Susan LaRosa, Co-Chair, also thanked each member of the Board for their time and effort, as well as Regional Councillor Taylor as the Co-Chair. Susan iterated the privilege she felt in working with the supportive, high calibre members for a common purpose. Susan also highlighted bringing together the collective voices of the Board to make an impact and to make people aware of the employment challenges facing employers and residents and the need for more private, purpose built rental housing in York Region. Susan also thanked Regional Chair Emmerson and York Region Council for the confidence they have shown in the Human Services Planning Board.

Other Business
11. Violence Prevention - Focus Program
Pedro Barata provided an overview of an innovative program currently running in Toronto that brings together situation tables at the community level representing local community housing, social agencies, mental health agencies and local primary health care agencies to manage identified high risk cases in priority neighbourhoods before they become problematic. Mr. Barata cited success metrics and suggested that best practices could be shared to research whether this type of model would be a good fit for York Region.
12. Life in the GTA: A Window on Well-Being
Medhat Mahdy presented information on a recently completed study, in partnership with the Wellesley Institute, called ‘Life in the GTA: A Window on Well-Being’. Mr. Mahdy advised that the study was conducted across the GTA, resulting in the completion of 8,200 surveys broken down by region which looked at 41 indicators of well-being. Mr. Mahdy stated that he could meet with representatives of York Region to discuss ways in which to mine the data effectively.
