Emergency and Transitional Housing
People who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness in York Region have access to an effective, coordinated and responsive system of supports and services to find and keep stable housing.
If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness, emergency and transitional housing can provide temporary housing and wraparound supports. In addition, drop-in programs offer supports and services to residents in need, during the day.
People experiencing homelessness in York Region that are seeking emergency housing are encouraged to contact:

Heat Relief Strategy
York Region’s 2025 Heat Relief Strategy for People Experiencing Homelessness provides information on how to access supports and services during the hot weather season, including drop-in programs. The Heat Relief Strategy also includes distribution of heat safety and cooling supplies to help mitigate the effects of extreme heat for people experiencing homelessness. The Heat Relief Strategy is in effect from June to September.

Cold Weather Response Plan
York Region’s Cold Weather Response Plan provides safe and welcoming services for people experiencing homelessness in York Region during the cold weather season. The plan expands services to protect people experiencing homelessness from cold weather, alerts people experiencing homelessness and other members of the public that cold weather conditions are expected or currently exist. The Plan also provides guidance and supports to people experiencing homelessness helping them take appropriate precautions. The Cold Weather Response Plan is typically in effect October and April.

York Regional Transit bus tickets are provided by shelters and drop-in locations across York Region. During Cold Weather Alerts, clients can call the Emergency Housing Central Intake Line to arrange for other forms of transportation.

Financial Assistance
York Region offers financial assistance for rent, mortgage payments, utilities and other housing costs through two programs for eligible residents.
Housing with Supports
Housing with Supports offers housing and daily meals for people who need supervision of their daily living activities. These are permanent homes for most people who stay there.
York Region offers financial help to people who are unable to pay for the full cost of housing at these homes.
Subsidized Housing
York Region administers and funds subsidized housing in all nine cities and towns, providing individuals, families and seniors with low- to moderate-incomes subsidies to help them pay rent.

Outreach Services
York Region Outreach Services assists individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness to access housing by providing:
- Case Management and service navigation and referrals
- Supports to access social assistance programs, rent assistance, ID supports, and other services.

Street Outreach Van
You can also contact the Street Outreach Van at 1-866-553-4053 seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Street Outreach Van (operated by Loft/Crosslinks) provides mobile services and supports for people experiencing homelessness at no cost.
