York Region approves $1.5 billion capital budget for 2026
Newmarket – York Regional Council approved $1.5 billion in capital spending for 2026. Aligned to deliver on the Strategic Plan, this capital spending is part of a record-level $14 billion 10-year capital plan to fund growth-related priority infrastructure projects and maintain assets in a state of good repair.
Organized under the three priority themes guiding York Region’s 2026 Budget, capital highlights over the next 10-years include:
Investing in Safer Communities
- Providing York Regional Police additional fleet and equipment to improve community safety
- Building seven paramedic response stations
- Adding 287 new emergency and transitional housing beds
Enabling Growth in our Communities
- Expanding new water and wastewater infrastructure capacity to 150,000 housing units to help local municipalities meet their provincial housing targets
- Adding 96 new lane kilometres of roads and improving 150 intersections
- Building over 580 new community housing units across four Housing York Inc. projects
Keeping People, Goods and Information Moving
- Investing in 79 additional kilometres of active transportation, including bike lanes and walking trails
- Expanding York Region Transit fleet with 315 electric buses, advancing design of priority bus rapidways and continuing to support Yonge North Subway Extension construction
- Adding over 190 kilometres of fibre network, bringing the total to more than 1,500 kilometres, enabling greater connectivity, especially in rural and underserved areas
