Student Eligibility and Application Process
New Summer Students
We are excited to welcome new and returning students for summer 2023. Applications will open in January of 2023 and we will be welcoming students for the summer term at the start of May. Please check this page for new information, as we will continue to provide updates regarding any new opportunities here.
Eligibility Requirements
- Student enrolled in FT program (secondary or post-secondary) and must be returning to FT studies after the work term (verification will be requested)
- Compliance with the mandatory Vaccination Policy, including providing proof of vaccination or valid exemption, approved by the Region
- Ability to provide appropriate validation based on requirements of the position (i.e. Driver’s Abstract, Police Check, POET etc.)
Duration of Work
Four-month work term during the summer months
Application Process
Interested in a summer student role?
To apply for a position:
- Create an online profile
- Complete the student questionnaire under “My Profile”
- Submit your cover letter and/or resume (single document preferred) titled Last name, First name and summer student year
If you already have a profile, log in and make sure all of your information and questionnaire is up-to-date before applying to a student posting.
Timelines
December: Summer student postings go live for new summer students
January: Application screening
January to March: Interviewing (only those are who are selected will be contacted)
March to April: Verbal offers and offer packages sent

Compensation
Compensation (hourly rate of pay) is determined by internal job level and completed years of post-secondary schooling.
Returning Summer Students
As a returning student, you do not have to submit an online application. Based on a successful performance appraisal, you will be emailed a summer student package.
Eligibility Requirements

Application Process
As a returning student,you do not have to submit an online application. Based on a successful performance appraisal, you will be emailed a summer student package that includes:
- A letter outlining the returning student application process
- A mandatory questionnaire and Employment of Relatives declaration form
Returning students do not have to interview unless they are being considered for a different position.

February to March: Verbal offers

Compensation (hourly rate of pay) is determined by internal job level and completed years of post-secondary schooling.
Co-op/Practicum
Eligibility Requirements
Student enrolled in full-time (FT) post-secondary program, with a co-op, practicum or internship requirement to graduate (verification will be requested).
Duration of Work
Work terms can range from four to 12 months.
Application Process
Co-op/Practicum roles are posted directly to the job boards of the school/educational institution. Job postings will outline what you will require when submitting your application.

York Region hires co-ops for the following work terms:
- Winter – January to April
- Spring/summer – May to August
- Fall – September to December
We post open positions to schools as early as four months before the anticipated start date.
