The Roads and Traffic Operations Centre uses advanced technology to keep travel across York Region reliable and efficient. By monitoring real‑time conditions and sharing timely updates, the Centre helps more than one million residents get where they need to go safely.

24/7 Monitoring and Response

The Centre operates around the clock, using a suite of tools to keep traffic flowing smoothly:

  • Traffic cameras and management systems to monitor road conditions
  • Weather tracking software to anticipate and respond to storms
  • Bluetooth sensors (430+ across the Regional network) to measure travel times and identify areas needing improvement

This technology allows staff to quickly address issues, respond to incidents, and support local requests.

Rapid Response to Incidents

When collisions, watermain breaks, debris, or construction disrupt travel, staff can act immediately to reduce delays. Response actions may include:

  • Adjusting traffic signal timing to improve flow
  • Activating roadside signs to alert drivers
  • Dispatching road crews for maintenance
  • Coordinating with York Regional Police for traffic control

Supporting Winter and Weather Operations

During severe weather, the Centre uses tracking systems and vehicle monitoring tools to help road crews prepare, deploy, and track progress. Staff also manage lane and road closure information and road permit data to keep the public and partners informed.

The Centre communicates with municipalities, police, and emergency services through broadcast updates and partners with Waze to share real‑time information with commuters.

With a growing network of Bluetooth sensors and advanced analytics, York Region can better understand travel patterns and identify opportunities for both short‑term improvements and long‑term planning.
