Chairman statement on tragic events at Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Day festival
On behalf of York Regional Council, The Regional Municipality of York and the residents of York Region, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the individuals who lost their lives and to the many others injured during the devastating incident at Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Day festival on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
This senseless act of violence, which targeted a joyful celebration of Filipino heritage, has left a profound impact on communities across the country.
The Lapu Lapu Day festival is a proud and powerful celebration of Filipino culture and history, honouring the enduring legacy of Datu Lapu-Lapu – a fearless leader whose spirit of courage and resilience continues to inspire generations. That such a cherished event was marred by tragedy and violence is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with the Filipino community in Vancouver, here in York Region and worldwide as they navigate this difficult time.
York Region is steadfast in its commitment to fostering welcoming and inclusive communities where all individuals can celebrate their cultural identities without fear. We stand in solidarity with the Filipino community and all those affected by this tragedy. In moments like these, we are reminded of the strength that comes from unity, compassion and mutual support.
Today we mourn this loss and reaffirm our dedication to building a Region rooted in respect, safety and inclusivity for all.
