Earth Day 2026 – Our Power, Our Planet
On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join communities around the world in recognizing Earth Day. This annual moment reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect the environment and reinforces the importance of working together to build a more sustainable and resilient future.
This year’s theme, Our Power, Our Planet, continues to highlight the critical role of clean and renewable energy in shaping that future. From solar and wind to innovative new technologies, the transition to sustainable energy is well underway. It is also a powerful reminder that the choices we make today will define the health of our planet for generations to come.
In York Region, we remain committed to leading by example. Through ongoing investments in clean energy, sustainable transportation and climate-resilient infrastructure, we are making steady progress toward our goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This includes expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure, growing our electric transit fleet and continuing to improve the energy efficiency of our facilities. We are also strengthening our ability to adapt to a changing climate, ensuring our communities remain safe, connected and sustainable.
At the same time, we know meaningful progress depends on collective action. Residents, businesses and community partners all play an important role. Whether it is reducing energy use, choosing active or low-emission transportation, minimizing waste or supporting local environmental initiatives, every action contributes to a larger impact.
As we recognize Earth Day 2026, we are reminded environmental stewardship is more than addressing climate change – it is about building healthy, vibrant communities where people and nature can thrive together. It is about making thoughtful choices today that will shape a stronger tomorrow.
