York Region Public Health investigating confirmed measles case in City of Vaughan (Thornhill) linked to ongoing outbreak
Newmarket – York Region Public Health is notifying the public of a new measles exposure from a newly confirmed case of measles in the City of Vaughan (Thornhill). This is the fifth case connected to the ongoing measles outbreak declared on September 4, 2025.
If you attended any of the locations below at the date and time listed, you may have been exposed to measles:

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital should:
- Immediately confirm they have two doses of measles vaccine
- Call York Region Public Health immediately if you were present AND you are pregnant, are with an infant under 12 months of age or are immunocompromised because you may be eligible for treatment to prevent measles infection
- Visit york.ca/MeaslesReporting to complete a brief contact follow-up survey; this will help York Region Public Health assess your risk (or those present with you) and prioritize contacts at greatest risk of becoming infected
- Watch for signs and symptoms of measles and if you develop any call York Region Public Health immediately at 1-877-464-9675 ext. 77280 seven days a week; if you are going to visit a health professional, call in advance and let them know before going to be seen to inform them you may have measles and require additional precautions

Measles vaccine to help prevent infection is time sensitive and only works if you get it as close to when you were exposed as possible.
Eligible people for this clinic include people exposed at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital aged 12 months to 55 years of age who do not have two doses of measles-containing vaccine. Other exposed people, including pregnant women and children under 12 months of age, should call York Region Public Health for additional preventive treatment options.
York Region Public Health is also advising the broader community (whether you think you were exposed or not) to:
- Ensure you are fully vaccinated with the measles vaccine
- This usually means two doses of measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV); those born before 1970 would likely have had measles illness as a child and are protected
- Immunizations are one of the safest ways to protect you, your children and your community from serious and potentially deadly vaccine-preventable diseases
- York Region Public Health offers measles vaccination appointments at our Community Vaccine Clinics; appointments can be booked online at york.ca/Measles
- Be mindful of the signs and symptoms of measles – if you develop symptoms, stay home and do not attend work or school
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads very easily through airborne transmission. The measles virus can live in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. Infants under one year of age, pregnant individuals and those who have a weakened immune system are at increased risk of severe complications, including encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and death.
Symptoms of measles start 7 to 21 days after exposure and may include:
- High fever, cough, runny nose
- Red, watery eyes such as pink eye or conjunctivitis
- Red rash that typically starts on the head and neck that then spreads downward to the chest, arms and legs; the rash typically is not itchy and appears 3 to 7 days after the start of other symptoms
