Applications Open for Provincial Appointment of York Region Chair and CEO
The Province of Ontario is accepting applications for the appointment of the next Chair and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Regional Municipality of York for the 2026 to 2030 term of Regional Council.
Under the Better Regional Governance Act, 2026, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing will appoint the next Regional Chair for the term beginning November 15, 2026. The appointment will follow the Municipal Election on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Individuals interested in being considered for appointment must apply through the Province of Ontario’s Public Appointments website by Monday, July 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for appointment, applicants must be eligible to vote in one of York Region’s nine cities and towns under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and be eligible to serve on council under the Municipal Act, 2021.
Eligible applicants must:
- Reside in, own or rent property in or be the spouse of an owner or tenant in one of York Region's nine cities or towns
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Not be prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law

The Province has indicated Regional Chair applicants should demonstrate strong leadership and possess the following competencies and experience:
- Previous elected political experience and a strong understanding of regional and provincial priorities
- Civic engagement and stakeholder relationship management
- Leading major organizational change initiatives
- Building trust and communicating effectively
- Delivering exceptional public service
- Strategic thinking and sound decision-making
