What makes a community feel alive?
Have you ever noticed how some places make you want to stay a little longer?
A park where families linger after a picnic.
A trail that turns a short walk into an afternoon outdoors.
A local market where neighbours stop to chat instead of rushing home.
It isn't just the place itself.
It's how that place makes people feel.
Welcoming. Connected. Alive.
That's what vibrant communities do.
They create spaces where everyday moments become experiences people want to return to.
Across York Region, those experiences are taking shape in different ways.
Sometimes, they begin under a canopy of trees. Over the past four years, more than 270 hectares of new green space have been secured, giving residents more opportunities to explore nature, stay active and spend time with the people around them. These landscapes do more than protect the environment. They become places where communities gather, children play and neighbours connect.
Vibrancy also means creating communities where people can continue enjoying those experiences throughout every stage of life. In 2026, York Region achieved Age-Friendly Community Designation, recognizing its commitment to helping older adults remain active, independent and connected. When communities are designed for all ages, they become places where people can continue participating in the life around them, no matter where they are in their journey.
Some of the places that bring communities together begin much closer to home.
York Region's agricultural community supports more than 600 farm-based businesses, producing food that finds its way to local tables, markets and restaurants. These farms help preserve the Region's rural character while supporting local businesses and creating experiences that connect residents to the land and the people who grow their food.
Even the journey between those places is changing.
Since 2022, York Region Transit has added 235 battery-electric buses to its fleet, helping create a quieter, cleaner ride while reducing emissions. Investments like these make it easier for people to reach parks, community spaces, local businesses and everyday destinations in more sustainable ways.
None of these things creates a vibrant community on its own.
But together, they shape the places where people choose to spend their time.
Where they meet friends.
Explore something new.
Support local businesses.
Or simply enjoy an afternoon outdoors.
Because vibrant communities aren't measured by the number of parks, buses or businesses they have.
They're measured by how they make people feel.
Feel like they belong. Like there's something to discover. Like home.
