What makes you feel like you belong?
There isn't usually one defining moment. It's rarely the day you move into a new home. Or the first time you visit a new neighbourhood.
More often, belonging is built little by little.
It's finding a place where your child is excited to play.
Getting directions when you aren't sure where to go.
Feeling confident enough to ask a question.
Seeing signage in a language you understand.
Welcomed into a conversation.
These moments may seem ordinary. But they change how a place feels.
Across York Region, welcoming communities are built by making it easier for people to participate, connect and access the services they need.
For young families, that often begins with EarlyON Child and Family Centres. In 2025, nearly 13,000 children and approximately 16,000 parents and caregivers participated in free EarlyON programs, creating opportunities to learn, play and build connections with other families in their community.
Sometimes belonging begins with knowing where to turn.
Community Resource Centres provide residents with in-person support, helping people access information, community resources and technology with staff available to guide them through services. When people know where to go for help, they are better able to move forward with confidence.
Welcoming communities are also built through systems that make everyone feel included.
At York Region's Provincial Offences Court, new bilingual signage, assistive hearing technology and improvements to hybrid hearings are helping make services more accessible for people with different needs and abilities. Small changes like these help ensure fairness is something people will experience, not just hope for.
For people who are new to the Region, belonging often starts with a simple invitation.
Welcoming Week celebrates the people, cultures and experiences that strengthen communities across York Region. In 2025, the Region worked alongside 32 community organizations to deliver 92 events across all nine local municipalities, bringing together more than 900 participants through activities that celebrated inclusion, connection and community.
Creating welcoming communities also means investing in organizations that help people feel supported every day.
Through York Region's 2026 Budget, investments in community housing, innovation and front-line services help ensure communities continue to grow in ways that are inclusive, resilient and ready for the future.
Belonging isn't created by one program. Or one service. Or one event.
It's created every time someone feels comfortable asking for help.
Every time a child makes a new friend.
Every time a newcomer feels at home.
Every time someone realizes, "I belong here."
