Yonge Street Improvements - Spring 2026 Update
York Region is widening and improving Yonge Street from Davis Drive to Green Lane in the Town of Newmarket and Town of East Gwillimbury to enhance service to the community and prepare for future growth.
Construction continues to take place on the east side of Yonge Street and includes:
- Excavating and widening the road
- Installing new fire hydrants, and storm sewer and watermain components
- Working on street lighting and traffic signals
Future stages of construction include installing sidewalks, cycle tracks and medians, paving and streetscaping. When the east side of the road is complete, construction will switch to the west side.
The benefit of lane shifts is they allow designated left turn lanes to remain open throughout construction and keep traffic moving. Signs guide travellers.
Crews are refreshing line markings when possible. In winter, paint wears off quickly due to road salt, grit and wet conditions. For new paint to set properly, the road must be dry.
