Celebrating Welcoming Communities

Welcoming Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people, places and experiences that help make York Region welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

From September 10 to 19, 2026, residents across York Region participated in events that fostered connection, understanding and inclusion. The celebration highlighted how welcoming communities help people feel connected, supported and valued.

Newcomers play an important role in York Region. They bring skills, experiences and perspectives that strengthen our communities, support the local economy and enrich community life.

Through Welcoming Week, communities across the Region came together to celebrate these contributions and reinforce the importance of belonging for everyone.

Supporting the Plan for Newcomer Inclusion

Coordinated by the York Region Local Immigration Partnership, Welcoming Week is an action under A Place to Thrive: York Region’s 2024 to 2027 Plan for Newcomer Inclusion.

The celebration reflects York Region's commitment to strengthening partnerships that support newcomer inclusion, belonging and connected communities. Welcoming Week demonstrates how collaboration among community organizations, local municipalities, residents and institutions helps create communities where everyone can thrive.

Together, we can continue creating communities where everyone feels welcome, valued and included.

Welcoming Week may be over, but building welcoming communities continues year-round. Whether it's meeting a new neighbour, participating in community events, learning about different cultures or supporting newcomer inclusion, every connection helps strengthen our communities and foster belonging.
