York Region condemns violence against Jewish community

On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am deeply troubled by last night’s shooting at the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario. The shooting occurred on Kol Nidre, the start of the holiest Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur. 

Violence, hatred and intimidation directed at any faith community are unacceptable and have no place in York Region or beyond. These incidents are deeply concerning and profoundly affect members of the Jewish community, while undermining the sense of safety, belonging and respect all residents expect and deserve.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths. York Region is proudly home to people of many faiths, cultures and backgrounds. Today, and every day, we stand with our Jewish residents and with all those who believe everyone deserves to live, worship and participate in community life free from fear.  

Our thoughts are with the injured police officer, and we extend our sincere wishes for a full and swift recovery. 

In moments of adversity, we must come together and stand united in our rejection of hate and in our shared commitment to building an inclusive York Region where everyone feels safe, valued, respected and welcomed. This is at the heart of our Inclusion Charter commitment and the community we are working to build together.
