York Region welcomes Advance Tunnel Contract Award for Yonge North Subway Extension

On behalf of The Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Council, we proudly commend the Ontario government and the Government of Canada's unwavering commitment to advancing the Yonge North Subway Extension through the award of the advance tunnel contract. Today's announcement reflects a unified front to protect Ontario and modernize transportation infrastructure, driving York Region’s economic growth and strengthening connections throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

As the largest transit expansion in Canadian history, the Yonge North Subway Extension is more than a transit project. The extension will put 26,000 more people within a 10-minute walk of transit, reduce daily travel times by up to 22 minutes on a trip from the City of Markham to downtown City of Toronto and help ease gridlock by getting commuters where they need to go faster.

The extension will bring the subway from Finch Station into the heart of York Region, extending to the rapidly growing cities of Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan, providing our residents with more efficient and sustainable travel options. I’m grateful to our partners across all levels of government for embracing a shared vision of a vibrant, well-connected region. Today’s milestone reflects the strong collaboration between the federal government, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto and the steadfast support of York Region and our nine cities and towns.

As York Region moves toward a projected population of over 2 million residents and 1 million jobs by 2051, the Yonge North Subway Extension remains a vital Regional Council transportation priority. As a key partner in this critical project, York Region is demonstrating commitment through meaningful capital investment, contributing a significant $1.12 billion to ensure this project becomes a reality.
