York Region crews shift from potholes to winter prep
After another busy spring and summer maintenance season, York Region's road crews are shifting gears from pothole repairs and roadway maintenance to fall activities that help prepare Regional roads for winter.
Throughout the year, crews patrol Regional roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week to identify road deficiencies and potholes, helping keep roads safe for all travellers. Thanks to the dedication of staff, more than 15,500 potholes have been repaired across York Region this season.
In addition to this season’s accomplishments, York Region also refreshed more than 3,600 kilometres of lane lines along Regional roads and fully or partially refreshed pavement markings at 275 intersections.
While pothole repairs continue year-round as needed, the busiest repair season is now winding down. Crews are turning their attention to fall maintenance activities and winter readiness efforts designed to support safe travel during the colder months ahead.
This work includes:
- Inspecting and replacing damaged or faded road signs to maintain visibility
- Completing catch basin cleaning and repairs to support stormwater drainage
- Repairing guiderails and road shoulders
- Removing debris and completing final grass-cutting cycles
- Preparing winter maintenance vehicles and equipment
- Replenishing brine supply and stocking salt and sand supplies at maintenance yards
- Training operators and conducting equipment inspections ahead of the winter season
Winter preparation begins long before the first snowfall
York Region maintains approximately 1,200 kilometres of Regional roads across all nine cities and towns.
To prepare for winter weather, crews inspect and calibrate equipment, replenish materials and ensure vehicles are ready to respond when conditions change.
York Region's winter maintenance fleet includes 132 vehicles, including 125 combination plow trucks and seven brine trucks, supported by advanced weather monitoring technology and trained operators who work around the clock to help keep roads safe during winter weather events.

From repairing potholes and refreshing lane lines in the spring and summer to preparing for snow and ice in the winter, York Region's Road Operations team works year-round to support safe and reliable travel for all road users.
