York Region 2026 Budget recognized for strong financial management and policies

International award marks more than two decades of recognition for budget excellence and accountability

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for York Region’s 2026 budget.

“For 22 consecutive years, York Region has been recognized with this prestigious award for meeting the highest principles of government budgeting to support strong, caring, safe communities,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Eric Jolliffe. “This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring residents receive reliable, efficient and responsive services that enhance the quality of life across York Region.”

The GFOA is an association serving more than 25,000 government finance professionals across North America. The award recognizes York Region’s commitment to governmental budgeting excellence and producing high-quality budget documents that are comprehensive, transparent and demonstrate best practices.

The Region’s 2026 Budget also received Special Recognition for Financial Policies. This special recognition is awarded when all three independent reviewers rate the budget document as “outstanding” in a specific area. York Region is among seven municipalities in North America to receive this recognition for the 2026 budget.

“Ongoing recognition of York Region’s leadership for strong financial management is something to be proud of,” said Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of Finance and Administration. “This award reflects the high standards of professionalism, financial stewardship and accountability that guide York Region’s work in supporting our communities.”

Earlier this year, York Region was awarded the Triple Crown medallion by the GFOA in recognition of receiving all three GFOA awards for the 2024 fiscal year. These three awards include the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award and Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.
