Veteran’s Week 2026: Honouring All Who Have Served
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I invite residents to join us in recognizing and honouring the courage, service and sacrifice of the women and men who have served Canada in times of war, conflict and peace. From those who served generations ago to those who continue to serve today, their dedication has helped protect the freedoms, rights and values we share.
As we recognize all who have served Canada, we also take time on November 8 – Indigenous Veterans Day – to honour the contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis veterans. During the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, more than 12,000 Indigenous People volunteered to serve Canada. Many answered the call despite facing discrimination and with no treaty obligation to serve. While their courage, sacrifice and devotion to their communities and country deserve our deepest respect, we must also acknowledge that many returned home to unequal treatment and were denied benefits and opportunities afforded to other veterans. Their service and experiences are an important part of Canada's history and must never be overlooked.
Throughout Veterans' Week, I encourage residents to take time to reflect on the contributions of all veterans, listen to their stories and show appreciation for the sacrifices made in service to our country. Their legacy is one of courage, resilience and an enduring commitment to others.
York Region will host an in-person Remembrance Day service at 10:25 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at the York Region Administrative Centre, located at 17250 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket. All members of the community are welcome to attend and join us in honouring those who have served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
On behalf of York Regional Council, I extend my sincere gratitude to all veterans, past and present, and to their families. We are forever grateful for your service and sacrifice.
