York Region celebrates National AccessAbility Week
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am proud to recognize May 31 to June 6, 2026, as National AccessAbility Week and reaffirm York Region’s commitment to building inclusive communities where everyone can participate and reach their full potential.
York Region is one of the fastest growing and most diverse municipalities in Canada. As our communities continue to grow and evolve, accessibility must remain at the centre of how we plan, design and deliver services. Creating a more accessible York Region is not only the right thing to do, but it also strengthens our communities, supports independence and helps ensure every resident can fully participate in community life.
Across York Region, important work is underway to identify, prevent and remove barriers in programs, services, public spaces, transportation, housing and digital platforms. This work reflects a shared commitment across Council, staff, community partners and residents to create a Region that is accessible by design, not by exception.
I recognize the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee for their continued leadership and contribution. Their advice, advocacy and lived experience help guide decision-making and ensure accessibility is embedded in the work we do across the organization. Their efforts are instrumental in advancing a more inclusive York Region.
As part of National AccessAbility Week, York Region will recognize Red Shirt Day of Action for Accessibility and Inclusion on June 3, 2026. Residents are encouraged to wear red to show support for people with disabilities and to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility and inclusion. In recognition of the day, the clock towers at the York Region Administrative Centre, 17250 Yonge Street, Town of Newmarket, will be illuminated red.
Together, we continue working toward a more accessible and inclusive York Region for all.
